My guess is that they aren't doing it on purpose. Could it be that they are trying to color it back to its original brown or black, but the coloring on top of gray hair makes it appear blue (especially in certain light) instead?

I don't think they try to but sometimes when you try to dye grey hair black and sometimes it turns a weird shade of blue, they aren't doing it on purpose. There aren't a whole bunch of crazy old people all over.

i have wondered this for years...

the only conclusion i came up with was that they went into the shops to by a black or blonde shade.. but because their eye sight has failed them they accidentally picked up the blue bottle.

once they have dyed it all in, their carers or family members were to kind (or evil in most peoples books.. haha) to actually tell them they have dyed it blue by mistake
